CHELSEA PUBLIC SCHOOL

ENHANCING STUDENT LEARNING

October 29, 2009

Dear Families and Community Members,

School has officially been in session for eight weeks and we are excited to share all the positive changes we have seen in the transition to a multi-age setting.  The benefits of multi-age groupings can be seen on many students’ faces.  The new social connections that have formed are a joy to witness at morning meeting, lunch, recess and throughout the academic day.  Most students have expanded their social and academic circles, and are acquiring cooperative learning skills as a result.

We have also seen huge benefits from our team teaching approach, which include sharing of ideas, enhanced instruction and more inspired teaching. Working in teams with consistent assessments allows for effective groupings of students based on their need and ability.  This method of teaching enhances student learning and helps all students to thrive.

Collaborating with each other is allowing for more opportunities to discuss what, when and why we teach.  These discussions encourage self-reflection and improve the quality of instruction.  Teams have worked hard during their common planning time and have spent a tremendous amount of time beyond the school day to make the transition to multi-age as smooth as possible.  We would like to thank the teachers and support staff for all their hard work and dedication to our school.

As a school community, we are committed to improving student learning, promoting high expectations, providing broader curriculum opportunities, and supporting meaningful relationships through a multi-age teaching philosophy.   We appreciate the support from families and community members during our first year as a multi-age school.  We look forward to continuing our work together for the benefit of all the children in our community.

Sincerely,

Karoline May, Principal
Pam Quinn, Curriculum Coordinator
